Bio

Character's Name: Carbuncle.
Birthdate: Unknown.
Age: Unknown.
Race: New Fayth; unknown.
Gender: Male.
Dress Sphere: Carbuncle (also known as Va'ali's Sphere).

Physical Description: As an aeon, he looked kind of like a neon squirrel. Now, however, he makes a very strange sort of human... not to mention a very small one. In fact, the Carbuncle we see now is modeled neither after his aeon nor his human form; his appearance is nearly identical to the childlike figure on his fayth statue, a mix between human and animal. Carbuncle is barely even 4'10", and he can't weigh more than 90 pounds -- he has no muscle on him at all. For the most part, his skin is a light tan just like any normal human being's, but it slowly fades into a deep blue in his toes, fingertips, and long, pointed ears. (His stomach is also a bit paler.) His finger and toenails are little claws that are naturally a light aquamarine in color. They're not retractable and do need to be clipped now and then, but he'd never sit still and let anybody cut them.

Carbuncle has patches of light, blue-green fur on his chest, arms, legs, and at the very tips of his ears. He also has the hair to match; the front frames his face, and the back somehow manages to defy gravity. Like his skin, his hair and fur also turn blue at the tips. His ears are slightly higher up on his head than regular human ears, and like an animal's they will prick up at the slightest sounds. His eyes are a little larger and rounder than usual, and they're almost an impossible shade of blue; eyes that color just aren't natural. To complete the "babyface"-look, Carbuncle also has a little button nose and a tiny mouth. Other unusual features include his slightly webbed fingers and toes, and a long, bushy tail.

But his trademark is, without question, the ruby on his forehead. It's fairly large, shaped like a diamond, and happens to be the source of his power. When casting a spell, the jewel emits bright lights of various colors. Who knows what'll happen if somebody breaks it?

Carbuncle looks like he takes fashion tips from Shiva. He has multicolored glass beads and feathers braided into some strands of his hair, particularly around the face and the back of his head. His upper half is covered (if you can call it covered) by a simple, turquoise knitted top. Said top laces up the sides, and is lined with light green feathers along the front seams. Because of his tail he can't wear any restricting clothing like pants, or even shorts; instead, he wears a tye-dyed wrap with various shades of blue, green, yellow and red. Carbuncle wears a considerable amount of jewelry, including the bangles around his arms and ankles, the red ribbon around his neck, and the metallic blue bracers around his upper arms. His anklets have small, red bells attached to them that jingle as he walks. Carbuncle does not wear shoes.

Personality: Carbuncle is a teeny tiny aeon with a personality to match. Though he's very friendly and affectionate by nature, he's also very shy and skittish. He would probably even run and hide from a rock. This comes from being so small and weak; he might be great at defense, but he couldn't fight to save his life. It takes a bit of coaxing to get him to calm down and realize that nobody's going to hurt him, but when you finally earn his trust, you've got it for life.

In general he acts much like a scrappy little puppy. When he finds somebody he likes, he will follow them (even if he's only following them in spirit and just waiting for the right time to pop out and help) to the ends of the earth. Even if they made him angry, he couldn't hold a grudge for long. He's sort of a doormat in that department. Why? Because Carbuncle just wants to help. He knows he's pretty much the runt of all aeons, but he wants to use the abilities he has to protect people. When there's nothing he can do, he feels very weak and insignificant... but give him a good pat on the back, and he'll practically be on cloud nine. As an aeon, he lives to serve; praise does wonders for his self-esteem, which is actually very easy to ruin. He loves people, but he fears them at the same time.

(It should also be noted that he hates people stepping on his tail. Please don't do it.)

Unfortunately, he's not the brightest crayon in the box. Sometimes he might accidentally cast reflect when he wants to protect someone he likes, but they just so happened to be casting cure at the time and all of a sudden the enemy is healed. So basically, he's just very cute and clueless. But at least his heart is in the right place?

Background: The Carbuncle Gippal managed to revive is a mixture of the memories of his fayth, and the memories of him as an aeon. As such, this Carbuncle remembers little of his life before being an aeon, though he remembers more and more with each passing day. In truth, if he ever told you his life story it may remind you of Seymour's mother, who became a fayth in order to protect her son. You might consider it a good thing that the person Carbuncle gave his life to protect did not become power-hungry and corrupt as a result, but unfortunately that doesn't mean this story has a happy ending.

In his day, about one thousand years ago, the Calm that Lady Yunalesca had brought about was coming to an end. Yevon's teachings spread through Spira like wildfire, and the people lived their lives in fear of Sin and the destruction it wrought. Back then, Carbuncle was a normal human being by the name of Na'ari. He was a bit taller than he is now, with tanned skin, dark hair and eyes, and a few freckles across the bridge of his nose. They lived in a large, machina metropolis built above the river now known as the Moonflow.

Na'ari was the younger brother of a summoner-in-training named Va'ali, six years his senior. Wherever one went, the other was sure to follow... that is, until Va'ali completed his training. When Va'ali was twenty-one, and Na'ari fifteen, he set off on his pilgrimage to Zanarkand. Na'ari did all he could to keep his brother from leaving, but it was no use: he was dead set on defeating Sin, and he wouldn't allow anybody to get in the way of his goal.

It was the night before his brother left home that Na'ari finally realized he could not stop him, but he didn't give up completely. As the saying goes, "if you can't beat them, join them"; Na'ari was small and weak, but he wanted to be able to aid his brother in some way. While his brother slept, he left home in search of answers. This took him to the city's temple, where he learned about summoners, aeons, and everything in between. He discovered that aeons came from things called fayth: people that willingly gave their lives up to be summoned by others. Their dreams and desires became a physical entity known as the aeons. And as he learned this, he knew at once what he had to do.

If he could not stop his brother, he at least wanted to help him defeat Sin. Na'ari gave his life that night to become the aeon Carbuncle, and sure enough a crystallized statue of a fayth took its place within the depths of the temple.

That morning, Va'ali left without saying goodbye to his brother (whom both he and his parents assumed was just too upset about his departure to come out of hiding). When he went to the nearby temple, he was informed that there was indeed an aeon inside -- something he hadn't known before. The summon came to him easily, and was his first aeon on his pilgrimage to Zanarkand. Unfortunately a little after his departure, the weight of the city caused its support to give way, and the whole thing sunk into the Moonflow. Nobody could summon Carbuncle ever again.

Va'ali never made it to Zanarkand. Not only did he not have any guardians, but another summoner had gotten there first. He returned home to find it submerged beneath the Moonflow, and he could only assume that his brother died in that flood. He lived out the rest of his life in Kilika, overcome with the guilt that he could not save his brother, and that he had not said goodbye before leaving. Little did he know that Na'ari was with him the whole time.

Carbuncle is revived from a sphere called Va'ali's Sphere, found in Kilika. The sphere was meant to document his brother's pilgrimage to Zanarkand, and was addressed to Na'ari as the goodbye he never got a chance to say. Va'ali soon found that Carbuncle was practically glued to him, in that even after he was finished with him in battle he refused to leave his side. Hence, most of the sphere features Carbuncle, his strange antics and his abilities, which was why it revived Carbuncle instead of his human brother. What little memories Carbuncle has of his human life now are the things Va'ali mentioned in his sphere. For the most part, he remembers nothing.

Weapon(s): None, but the source of his power is the large ruby on his head.

Abilities: His one universal talent is popping unexpectedly out of holes in the ground/appearing out of nowhere. (He is very good at this, yes he is.) Other than that, he is also best known for Ruby Light, a defensive move that casts reflect on the party. Reflect works against magic spells of all kinds, but not physical attacks. His other protection spells include in Emerald Light, which casts haste and protect; Diamond Light, which casts vanish and protect; and finally, Jewel Light, which casts shell and protect.
